The Jindo is a little known South Korean breed, which comes from Jindo, a small island in the south west of the country.
They are known for their beauty, intelligence, loyalty and good temperament.

There is a famous story about a Jindo from the early 90's, in which the dog named Baeku, was given away by its owner because she couldn't afford to keep it. The dog was given to someone who lived hundreds of kilometers away. One day the dog escaped and several months later, haggard and worn out she showed up on the doorstep of her original owner, nothing more than skin and bones. This is how loyal these dogs are.

They are considered a national treasure in Korea and were bred for hunting. As such their instinct is to kill small animals such as rodents, moles, cats and on occasion bigger animals such as deer. At one time they were even used in packs to hunt Siberian Tigers. This is one of three breeds known to have been used for this dangerous activity.

The dogs come in a few different colors, usually a golden brown or white, but are occasionally black. They are part of the spitz family of dogs and in appearance they look similar to a small husky.
Although they have a lovable nature they are also known for their independent streak and can be quite stubborn at times. They always think they know best and will often do as they please rather than doing what they're told. This makes it difficult for first time dog owners to handle and this breed is probably not appropriate for someone who has never had a strong-willed dog before.

They have a great deal of energy and they love being outdoors. Extremely affectionate they also love the company of people and need lots of attention, because when they become bored they are known for getting into mischief and can become quite destructive!!

Because of the large Korean population in Los Angeles, and the sometimes difficult nature of this dog, there are many of this breed in shelters in and around LA county available for adoption.
